CONCENTRATION

My central idea for my concentration is about monsters and the complexity of these monsters. When I grew up, the only monsters that I thought existed were the ones from storybooks, such as the Wicked Witch of the West or Godzilla. But as I grew older and became more aware of the world, I learned that these storybook monsters are actually based on real life. People do awful things and the villains I read in books, still run loose in today's world.

I created my artwork from fantasy, storybook type of monsters to real life monsters. I did this to demonstrate how my view of monsters had evolved. When I was growing up, I viewed monsters or villains in this case as something to entertain me. As a result, the first two images I drew, had no connection to serious monsters in this world, but, instead, showed how creative and fascinating monsters can be.

But when I learned about the devastating consequences that these monsters created, they were not only fascinating, but now evil. As a result, the next two images showed girls being afraid of these monsters.

As I began school and interacted more with the outside world, I realized that there were many similarities to these monsters and I later painted monsters that still looked like they came from storybooks but were based on issues that plague people's lives as seen with the red riding hood one, which is based on cyberstalking.

I finally, progressed it to how I see the world now. I now know that the books in monsters are based on real people. As a result, I no longer based my artwork on fairy tales but on real things such as drugs, mental illness, to finally, the last image: people. People have the right to choose between good and bad, and it's our actions that decide if we're the heroes or the monsters.
